In a move that could change the future of mobile games, Epic Games is taking over both Apple and Google by defeating the drum of war.
‘Fortnite’ is one of the biggest things in pop culture and beyond in recent years, BUT it’s more than a brave move to go both camels at the same time.
The background that leads to this is Apple’s removal of Epic’s product from the Apple Store. [Epic Games] applied direct payments, thus directly cutting Apple’s 30% cut. These percentages are standard for purchases in the app store and are in the publishing contract that each developer must comply with in order to offer the product (s) for the platform.
But things don’t stop there. A few hours later, Epic opposed another tech giant, Google, which has a 30% share in all revenue from the Google Store and is legally binding for it to be published on the entire Android market worldwide.
Epic DOES NOT SEEK any monetary compensation, defying Apple’s monopoly [and Google]exactly as seen above. There’s more to this story, but to keep things simple: They want to change the rules and prefer open mobile markets where everyone will have the opportunity to:
1) Pay less to Google and Apple, maybe offer lower costs to end users
2) Open Your Own Store[s] – [Epic] you already have one
Mobile games have approximate market share. 50% in a $ 160 billion industry.
