I could call at any time if I needed to check back in to my home office, but I always had to wait if I needed to check something on my PC. There is now a great free app for Windows and Linux called PC Monitor that allows you to monitor your machine with your Android device, iPhone, or Windows 7 phone.
You may need to see how the download is progressing. Alternatively, you may need to kill the process of eating the network alive. It’s easy when onsite, but you need a solution if you’re working remotely. With a PC monitor, you can check in and control your Windows or Linux machine from almost any smartphone. - Download the PC monitor and install it on your computer and smartphone.

Keep in mind that anything that allows this type of access may allow others access. This software is secure, but as secure as your password, change it often. PC monitors are free on up to 3 computers. Then you need to purchase a subscription.
